ABSTRACT. In recent decades, continental waterfowl populations have increased while we continue to see a decline in hunting participation. This research was conducted to inform the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resource’s wildlife management program on waterfowl hunter behavior and opinions on various aspects surrounding duck hunting in Wisconsin. Study results are based on data generated from four questionnaires mailed to a random sample of Wisconsin registrants in the Migratory Bird Harvest Information Program (HIP). Questionnaires were mailed after the 2007, 2009, 2013, and 2015 duck hunting seasons and examined hunter behavior, satisfaction with Wisconsin hunts, commitment to duck hunting, problems encountered while hunting and preferences regarding various management options. Results indicate clear differences in hunting satisfaction between older duck hunters and younger duck hunters. These satisfaction ratings may reflect differences in hunting frequency, harvest success rate, scouting trips, as well as access to and willingness to try new hunting areas. We believe results may have implications for hunter recruitment and retention efforts.  We will describe the implications of understanding changes in duck hunter behavior and preferences.
