FISH PHYSIOLOGY & BEHAVIOR: Migration of Fishes in a Coastal Lake Erie Wetland

ABSTRACT. Historical Lake Erie coastal wetland management included diking wetlands to allow water level manipulation. This promotes aquatic vegetation growth essential for waterfowl use. Recently, restoration efforts have aimed to reconnect wetlands for use by native fishes such as Northern Pike. However, use by invasive nuisance species such as Common Carp can be a negative side effect to reconnection. To provide information on temporal patterns of spawning migrations of fishes and investigate opportunities to minimize immigration by this nuisance species, DIDSON sonar was deployed at a wetland intake structure in spring 2017.
