AUTHORS. Matt Burlingame, Indiana Division of Fish & Wildlife

ABSTRACT. Fish and wildlife agencies are struggling with declining participation and license sales. Consequently, agencies are investing resources in activities aimed to recruit new anglers, reactivate former anglers, and retain current anglers. Many agencies appear to be targeting most of their R3 efforts at recruitment with little experience doing so. As a former fisheries biologist, turned college coach, having now returned to a fish & wildlife arena frenzied with R3 priorities, I hope to provide insights into the recruiting process. I see 5 areas where parallels can be drawn between student-athletes and anglers. I will present these as food for thought and to spark discussion about how to better recruit anglers and increase participation.
