ABSTRACT: Seasonal activities associated with preparation for hibernation can provide insights into how a species may respond to changes in climate. We examined effects of island characteristics and year on variation of American black bear Ursus americanus seasonal activity across Northern Wisconsin, USA. We hypothesized that black bear activity would cease earlier and initiate later at more northerly latitudes. We also expected winter inactivity patterns to vary across years. To examine these predictions, we analyzed the seasonal activity patterns of black bear within the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore in Bayfield County, WI, USA. We compared the seasonal patterns of black bear activity and inactivity across islands and the mainland using camera trap data from a large wildlife monitoring project.  Preliminary results indicate significant variation in seasonal activity and highlight the need for a more comprehensive and long-term examination of such patterns.
