ABSTRACT: Mobile hydroacoustic surveys are used for a variety of studies ranging from seafloor mapping to estimating fish densities. Most applications use a downward-facing transducer deployment; however shallow environments (e.g., rivers) necessitate side-facing transducers. As a result of the shallow beam angle striking the substrate, the line drawing functions of post-processing software (e.g., Echoview) for identifying the bottom exclusion line are not reliable options. Manual drawing of lines by a technician provides accurate exclusion lines, but is time-intensive and may introduce human bias. Therefore, to increase efficiency and remove human bias during post-processing, a custom Python script was developed to automate the drawing of exclusion lines. The custom program exports target strength data from Echoview as a text file and reformats it into a matrix. A moving window then iterates through the matrix determining where to draw the exclusion line on the river bottom by examining and comparing the target strength values. The end result is an exclusion line file that outperforms built-in exclusion line algorithms in Echoview and provides a line of comparable accuracy to a manually drawn line in a fraction of the time. The methods and tools used in this semi-automated workflow can easily be applied to a variety of projects using side-facing transducer deployment in shallow environments, thereby increasing time and cost efficiency.
