ABSTRACT: Fisheries professionals lack effective tools for determining Brown Trout (Salmo trutta) gender in a nonlethal fashion. This study introduces new methodology to determine Brown Trout gender via morphometric measurements.  Brown Trout (N=142) ranging from 175 to 394 millimeters total length were collected from Spearfish Creek, South Dakota. Images of Brown Trout were taken streamside and later analyzed using “ImageJ” software to apply a truss network formed by distances between anatomical features. These measurements were used to examine morphometric differences between male and female trout with a focus on six different morphological traits: M2; snout tip to anterior pectoral fin, M3; snout tip to gill juncture, M4; gill juncture to crown, M6; crown to anterior pectoral fin, M13; anterior pelvic fin to posterior dorsal fin, and M22; posterior anal fin to anterior adipose fin. Based on these measurements a correct classification accuracy of 93% males and 83% females was found when based on a K-nearest neighbor (N=5) discriminant function analysis of M2-M6 morphological traits, of fish over 230mm. With this high classification accuracy we are optimistic that this methodology can be a useful and accurate management tool when attempting to sex Brown Trout in a nonlethal manner.
