ABSTRACT: Resource pulses, such as anadromous fish spawning events or nutrient turnover from a hurricane, are high magnitude resource events that occur over short time intervals. Pulse events influence life history traits of consumers, affect ecosystem heterogeneity, and are sometimes key management considerations. Anthropogenic pulsed resources are common, but their effects on animal communities and ecosystems are not well understood. In Michigan, bait (usually human food) is placed on the landscape to attract black bears for hunting. The extent to which non-target species use such bait, however, is unrecorded. To examine the extent of non-target use, we used two methods. First, during August-October 2016, we constructed and monitored 21 bear bait sites across the western Upper Peninsula of Michigan. A remote camera was located at each site to record non-target species that used the bait. We also investigated carnivore use of bear bait across the state through specific questions in the annual bear hunter surveys. Hunters that used remote cameras were asked to indicate which species, other than bears, were photographed at bait sites. Preliminary results indicate that > 16 non-target species utilized bait sites both during a re-baiting period (August 10-September 24) as well as after baiting stopped (September 25-October 29). This research will provide insight into species richness and potential interactions that occur when a pulsed anthropogenic supplement is available.
